Human Genome Research Articles

The human genome is a complete set of nucleic acid sequences for humans, encoded as DNA in the cell nuclei of 23 chromosome pairs and in a small DNA molecule found within individual mitochondrias. Usually these are treated as the nuclear genome, and the mitochondrial genome, separately. There are an estimated 20,000-25,000 genes that codify human proteins. The estimation of the number of human genes has been regularly revised down from the initial predictions of 100,000 or more as the accuracy of genome sequence and methods of gene finding have improved and may continue to fall. The Human Genome Project's work has helped researchers to begin understanding the blueprint for creating a individual. This knowledge will have a significant effect on the fields of medicine, biotechnology and life sciences as researchers learn more about the roles of genes and proteins.
