Signal Transduction Journals

Signal transduction is how a chemical or physical signal is transmitted as a series of molecular events through a cell, most commonly protein phosphorylation catalyzed by protein kinases, which eventually leads to a cell response. Proteins responsible for sensing stimuli are usually referred to as receptors, although the term sensor is used in some situations. At a receptor, the changes induced by ligand binding create a biochemical cascade, which can be a series of biochemical events called a signaling pathway. They form networks when signaling pathways interact with each other which allow coordinating cellular responses, often through combinatorial signaling events. At the molecular level, these responses include changes in gene transcription or translation, and changes in proteins post-translation and conformation, as well as changes in their position. The basic mechanisms regulating cell formation, proliferation, metabolism and many other processes are these molecular events. Signal transduction pathways control cell contact in multicellular organisms throughout a great variety of ways.
