Cardiovascular: Relating to the circulatory system, which includes the heart and blood vessels and takes nutrients and oxygen to the tissues of the body and removes carbon dioxide and other wastes from them. Heart and blood vessel illness (also called heart disease) comprises numerous problems, many of which are associated to a process called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a stage that develops when a substance called plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries. This buildup narrows the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow through easily. If a blood clot is made, it can block the blood flow. This could cause a heart attack or stroke. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a class of diseases that include the heart or blood vessels. CVD comprises coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction (commonly known as a heart attack). Other CVDs include stroke, heart failure, hypertensive heart disease, rheumatic heart disease, cardiomyopathy, abnormal heart rhythms, congenital heart disease, valvular heart disease, carditis, aortic aneurysms, peripheral artery disease, thromboembolic disease, and venous thrombosis.
