Ankle Replacement Research Articles

Ankle replacement surgery is a replacement to an artificial implant for a damaged ankle joint. The ankle joint (tibiotalar joint) is the location where the shinbone (tibia) rests on top of a foot bone, the talus. Arthritis may affect this joint, as well as other foot joints. The smooth cartilage wears off on the surface of the bones over time. This can lead to joint pain , inflammation and swelling. Ankle replacement surgery is a technique for removing this weakened joint in order to alleviate this pressure and swell. The treatment usually takes place under general anesthesia. To enter the injured joint, the surgeon must make an incision in the foot. Next the surgeon removes damaged tibia and talus bones. The surgeon must connect artificial metal joints to the remaining surfaces of the bone, and insert a layer of plastic between them.   A research article is a primary source that reports the methods and results of an original study performed by the authors, assesses its contribution to the body of knowledge in a given area, and is published in a peer-reviewed scholarly journal.
