Synthesis of 4-arylmethylidene-3-methyl-isoxazol-5(4H)-ones via a three-component reaction in water catalyzed by sodium ascorbate

An efficient procedure for the one-pot synthesis of 4-arylmethylene-3- methylisoxazol-5-ones fromethyl acetoacetate, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, and various aromatic aldehydes using sodium ascorbate as a safe, clean, and green catalyst in water is reported. The advantages of this work are clean, easy work-up, high yields, and the use of water as environmentally benign solvent.
