Phenyl [N-mono (carbethoxymalonoyl)]carboxyhydrazides (2) and bis-[N- monocarbethoxymalonyl]dihydrazides (5) were synthesized by the reaction with respective hydrazides (1 & 4) and diethylmalonate respectively. These on further reactionwith substituted-2-hydroxy-3-formyl-quinolines yielded phenyl [N-(substituted-2H-pyran [2, 3-b] quinoline-2-one)-3- carboxyl]carboxyhydrazides (3a-e) and bis[N-(substituted-2H-pyran [2, 3- b] quinoline-2-one)-3-carboxyl]dicarboxyhydrazides (6a-e). Structures of the all the newly synthesized compounds were confirmed by spectral data. All these compounds have been screened for their antibacterial activity against S. aureus, E. coli & B. subtilus and antifungal activity against A. niger & C. albicans. Some of these pyran(2, 3-b)quinolines showed good antimicrobial activity.
