Hemicraniectomy

Hemicraniectomy is a surgical procedure where a large flap of the skull is removed and the dura is opened; this gives space for the swollen brain to bulge and reduces the intracranial pressure. A Craniotomy is the most commonly performed surgery for brain tumor removal. A Craniectomy is similar to a craniotomy as both procedures involve removing a portion of the skull, the difference is that after a craniotomy the bone is replaced and after a craniectomy the bone is not immediately replaced. During the operation, a surgeon removes the portion of the skull that is causing the pressure on the brain. Once the surgeon has removed the bone, they will stop any bleeding before closing the wound with stitches. After surgery, the bone taken from the skull is usually stored in a freezer.
