Foot Drop Review Articles

Foot drop is an abnormality of the gait in which the forefoot drops due to weakness, irritation or damage to the common fibular nerve including the sciatic nerve, or muscle paralysis in the lower leg's anterior portion. Usually it's a symptom of a larger problem, not an disease in itself. Foot drop is caused by muscular weakness or paralysis involved in lifting the front part of the foot. Foot drop is not a disease itself but a symptom of an underlying problem. It can be permanent or temporary. Foot drop causes include: nerve injury, brain or spinal disorders, and muscle disorders. Surgery to try to restore or decompress a damaged nerve may be recommended. In cases where foot drop is permanent, surgery to fuse the foot and ankle joint or to transfer tendons from stronger muscles may help improve gait and stability.
