Abstract

Sustainable Buildings for Sustainable Environment

Author(s): Anupam Roy

Civilization, urbanization and industrialization at a massive scale have caused damage to the environment. The situation has worsened due to lack of attention towards protecting the environment, while designing and executing the infrastructure and industrial projects. As environmental degradation is associated with the developmental work, environment impact assessment study is required before any developmental work is undertaken. In the developmental projects, building sector is a vital element of any economy. Building sectors are dominant energy consumers. Energy consumption related to building sectors being one of the most critical environment issues, controlling its use is very essential in present circumstances. The life cycle of a building is made of several distinct phases – such as extraction and processing of raw materials, construction, operation, demolition including considerations of recycling and reuse.
