1,1-bis(thiocyanato/ selenocyanato mercurio) ferrocene forms adducts with M(NCS)2 [M- Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn]. The adducts have unsaturation at M, and can raise their coordination number from four to six. They have been reacted with nicotinamide, bipyridyl and phenanthroline and the complexes formed by them have been studied. The bond length and bond order of various metal- nitrogen bond, Hg- S, Se and N-S, Se bonds have been evaluated with the help of Cache software. The bond length and bond order indicate that in nicotinamide complexes, one of the HgSCN-M bonds is stable, whereas the other is long and weak. In nicotinamide and phenanthroline complexes both the SCN-M bonds are stable, whereas in bipyridyl complexes only one bond is stable. The M-N bonds indicate that two molecules of nicotinamide are coordinated whereas in bipyridyl complexes only one nitrogen of bipyridyl is coordinated. In phenanthroline complexes no metal-ligand bond is indicated. The reported structures of bipyridyl and phenanthroline complexes are thus questionable in the light of bond-length studies. The lengths of Hg-S, S-N, Se-N and Hg-Se bonds are not disturbed on complex formation.
