Scintigraphy

This chapter provides a summary of the scintigraphy technique in various diseases. Scintigraphy is very sensitive for lesion detection and provides a functional display of skeletal metabolism. It also provides a rapid evaluation of the entire skeleton but, the appearances are nonspecific. The key roles of scintigraphy in osteoporosis, osteomalacia, hyperthyroidism, Paget disease, and primary hyperthyroidism are discussed. The technique helps in identification of fractures, causes of pain, and coexistent pathology in osteoporosis. The assessment of severity of skeletal involvement by subjective evaluation of metabolic features, and identification of brown tumours in hyperthyroidism can be done. The earliest evidence of active disease, and documentation of extent of disease can be identified in Paget disease.
