A wart is a skin development caused by certain forms of the human papillomavirus ( HPV) virus. HPV infects the skin's top layer, and typically reaches the body in a damaged region of skin. The virus causes the top layer of skin to expand rapidly, thereby creating a wart. The bulk of warts go away by themselves within months or years. Warts can develop anywhere on the body, and different kinds exist. For example, that warts grow most commonly on the hands but can grow anywhere. Plantar warts grow on the sole of feet. Warts come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. A wart may be a lump with a rough surface, or it may be flat and smooth. Tiny blood vessels grow into the core of the wart to provide blood.
