Inhalational Anesthesia Innovations

An inhalation anesthetic is a chemical compound that has general anesthetic properties which can be delivered through inhalation. They are delivered via a face mask, airway laryngeal mask or tracheal tube linked to an anesthetic vaporizer and an anesthetic method of delivery. Agents of considerable contemporary clinical concern include volatile anesthetic agents such as isoflurane, sevoflurane, and desflurane, as well as certain anesthetic gases such as nitrous oxide and xenon. Inhaled anesthetics are believed to inhibit exciting presynaptic channel activity mediated by neuronal nicotinic, serotonergic, and glutaminergic receptors, while also increasing GABAA and glycine-mediated inhibitory post-synaptic channel activity. Desflurane, isoflurane, nitrous oxide, sevoflurane, xenon are currently used inhalational anesthetic agents.
