Defined as weight divided by the square of height, the body mass index ( BMI) was developed to allow weight measurement independent of height. Many steps have also been considered in an effort to better capture risk for all-cause mortality as well as obesity related morbidities, which include such conditions as hypertension, atherosclerotic vascular disease , diabetes, certain cancers, and the newly identified locomotive syndrome. Other simple biometrics, primarily waist circumference (WC) and various WC derivatives such as Waist-hip ratio (WHR) and Waist-height ratio (WHtR) have thus increased BMI).
