Astrocytes

Astrocytes are star-shaped glial cell of the central nervous system. Astrocytes help form the body of the brain, and are thought to play variety of active roles, including the secretion or absorption of neural transmitters and maintenance of the blood–brain barrier. They are the most abundant glial cells in the brain that are closely associated with neuronal synapses. Astrocytes are the star-shaped supporting cells present within the brain and medulla spinalis . They are the most abundant and diverse glial cells present in the CNS. They are the star-shaped cells having a centrosome with radiating protoplasmic processes. They may be protoplasmic or fibrous in shape.
