Ankle Arthroscopy Open Access Articles

Ankle arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure which is used by orthopedic surgeons to treat ankle joint problems. Ankle arthroscopy uses a small fibre-optic camera (arthroscope) capable of magnifying and transmitting ankle images to a video screen. Ankle arthroscopies may reduce pain in the ankle and may improve overall function. The arthroscopy can be used to diagnose and treat various ankle joint disorders. The list of problems with this technology that can sometimes be dealt with is constantly evolving and includes: Ankle arthritis: Ankle fusion is an option for many end stage ankle arthritis patients to treat. Results can be greater than or equivalent to open techniques. Ankle fractures: Ankle arthroscopy can be used in combination with open fracture repair techniques. That can help to maintain proper bone and cartilage alignment. These can also be used to search for cartilage damage within the ankle during reconstruction of ankle fractures. Ankle instability: Ankle ligaments may become stretched out, which may give rise to a feeling that the ankle is giving way. Those ligaments can be surgically tightened. Arthroscopic techniques can serve as an option to treat moderate instability.
