Abstract

The chemistry classroom through concept, corollary, going cartoon and comic

Author(s): V.Jagannadham, R.Sanjeev

Asuccessful teacher is onewho is 25% perspiration and 75%theatre.Asuccessful teacher is onewho knowswhat not to teach rather thanwhat to teach. Several definitions of successful teacher are given for their convenience. But our concern is physical or physical organic chemistryteacherswhose attributes areexpressedwithmathematicalprecisionand in relation to the students. There is dynamic equilibriumbetween teacher (teaching) taught (reception of ideas or concepts). These two processes keep on occurring and a point is reachedwhere equilibriumwill be established. This point is a stage in the processeswhere number of ideas or concepts given by the teacher are equal to number of ideas or concepts received bythe students. The value of the equilibriumconstantmust be 0.8K1.0. The equilibrium, teacher taught should be a dynamic equilibrium. For a real class room lecture the value of the equilibriumconstant(K)ofthisequilibriummustat least be 0.8 K 1.0.Then the free energychangewould be in between 0.3 kJ/mol and zero. In otherwords it can be looked upon as a machine with at least 80% efficiency. With regard to classroomatmosphere it is not comparable toBoyle’s gas (Boyle’s gas is an ideal gaswhere there are no forces between themolecules. This implies that students andteacher in the classroom arenot inactive). The atmosphereiscomparable toVan derWaal’s gaswhere there exists forces between the molecules. This implies the students and teachers are activelyinteracting. With regard teacher hemust examinehimselfwhathemeanswhenhethinksofachemistrylesson tobe taught for the day.The teachingmust be athoughtprovoking.Anexcellentclass roomteaching is an art and a good teacher should note that the fundamentals should be taught comprehensively. The usageofblack-boardandaudiovisual techniquesmust be fifty-fifty.GailGodwin anAmericanNovelist says that “Good teaching is one-fourth preparation and three-fourths pure theatre”.
