Screening For TB:

A positive TB diagnostic test or TB biopsy only tells that an individual has been infected with TB bacteria. It doesn't tell whether the person has latent TB infection (LTBI) or has progressed to TB disease. Other tests, like a chest x-ray and a sample of sputum, are needed to ascertain whether the person has TB disease. The primary screening method for TB infection (active or latent) is that the Mantoux tuberculin diagnostic test with purified protein derivative (PPD). An in vitro biopsy supported interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) with antigens specific for M tuberculosis also can be wont to screen for latent TB infection.
