Open Access Journals on Hair follicle: The coat of hair, which keeps most mammals warm, dry and protected against harmful elements, requires a constant supply of new hair throughout the animal’s lifetime. Existing follicles undergo growth cycles (anagen), regression (catagen), and rest (telogene) to produce new hairs. During each anagen phase, follicles produce a whole hair shaft from tip to root; during catagen and telogen, follicles reset and prepare their stem cells in order that they will receive the signal to start out subsequent growth phase and make the new hair shaft. The hair cycle provides an important model for studies of the regulation of somatic cell quiescence and activation in a regenerative adult epithelial tissue as well as transit amplifying cell proliferation, cell-fate choice, differentiation and apoptosis.
