Gait Abnormalities

The ordinary walk cycle is separated into two stages (swing and position stage). Every appendage will switch back and forth between these two stages. Position stage Appendage with the foot on the ground Starts with "heel strike" (heel comes into contact with the floor); closes with toe-off Hip abductors of the appendage in position stage agreement to balance out the pelvic support and forestall the pelvis dropping on the contralateral side (inability to do so causes a waddling walk) Swing stage Appendage with the foot not contacting the ground Starts with toe-off, when foot plantar flexes to push the foot off the ground Knee and hip flex to draw the appendage forward Foot dorsiflexes following toe-off so the foot clears the floor and doesn't drag (inability to do so prompts a foot drop and a high venturing walk)
