cachexia-review-articles: A general state of ill health involving marked weight loss and muscle loss. Wasting syndrome is often an indication of diseases, such as cancer, AIDS, heart failure or advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Cachexia induces the cytokines, in particular tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-1, and IL-6, is thought to inhibit the activity of lipoprotein lipase (LPL), and thereby induces weight loss as a result of reduced fat accumulation in the tissues Symptoms include weight loss, muscle loss, a lack of appetite, fatigue and reduced strength. Treatment includes nutritional counselling, medication to stimulate appetite and weight gain and treating the underlying disease. Cachexia can have causes that aren't due to underlying disease. Examples include lack of access to food, intentional avoidance of food or hunger strike. A cachexia-review-articles, also called a literature review, is a survey of previously published research on a cachexia topic. It should give an overview of current thinking on the theme and, unlike an original cachexia research article, won't present new experimental results.
