Limbic Encephalitis

Limbic encephalitis is thought to be caused by a reaction of the immune system to various stimuli such as cancers, tumors , infections, and generalized autoimmune disorders. In many patients, limbic encephalitis is associated with a tumor or cancer. This is known as paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis (PLE). The diagnosis of autoimmune encephalitis is particularly important because the disease is potentially treatable with medicines that dampen down the immune system. Neurologic symptoms may include impaired memory and cognition, abnormal movements, seizures, and/or problems with balance, speech, or vision. Psychiatric symptoms may include psychosis, aggression, inappropriate sexual behaviors, panic attacks, compulsive behaviors, euphoria or fear.
