Leiomyomas Scholarly Peer-review Journal
A
leiomyoma also known as fibroids, is a benign smooth muscle
tumor that very rarely becomes
cancer (0.1%). They can occur in any organ, but the most common forms occur in the uterus, small bowel, and the esophagus. Doctors don't know the cause of uterine fibroids, but research and clinical experience point to these factors: Genetic changes. Many fibroids contain changes in genes that differ from those in normal uterine muscle cells. A myomectomy is an operation to remove fibroids while preserving the uterus. For women who have fibroid symptoms and want to have children in the future, myomectomy is the best treatment option. Myomectomy is very effective, but fibroids can re-grow. Larger fibroids may cause a woman to gain weight in the abdomen, giving the appearance of normal belly fat.
