Health Literacy

Depression has a significant impact on the community. This impact may be greater on rural communities. Improving mental health literacy has been employed to address this problem. Treatments rated as very helpful included talking to a friend, social group participation, meditation, regular exercise and psychological therapy. Tranquilizers and painkiller medication were perceived by most as not helpful. Antidepressant medication was rated as moderately helpful. This may inform future mental health literacy initiatives by highlighting a number of issues that may be appropriate to address including the need for active recruitment of typically underrepresented groups, difficulty communicating depression risk and negative outcome expectations with depression.
