Egyptology

Egyptology is the study of Ancient Egypt's culture and language from the attestation of the first Predynastic cultures in the Nile Valley during the sixth millennium BC to the early Christian Egypt of the first centuries AD. An "Egyptologist" is a disciplinary practicer. Egyptological study and analysis blends modern techniques and traditions of archaeology with advanced linguistic and philological studies of ancient texts. Egyptian written documents date to c. 3150 BCE, when the first pharaohs in Upper Egypt developed a hieroglyphic script. These kings' documents, their successors, and their subjects, as well as their culture's archeological material, well preserved by the arid climate of Egypt, provide the source material for Egyptological study.
