Habitat Destruction

The loss of ecosystems is the mechanism by which a natural ecosystem is incapable of sustaining its native species. The organisms that previously inhabited the site are displaced or die, diminishing the abundance of biodiversity and species. The destruction of habitats through human activity is primarily aimed at harvesting natural resources for industrial production and urbanisation. Habitat clearance for agriculture is the main cause of habitat loss. Other significant habitat destruction causes include mining, logging, trawling and urban sprawl. Currently, habitat destruction is ranked the primary cause of species extinction worldwide. The disruptive environmental changes include more indirect factors such as geological processes and climate change, invasive species invasion, loss of nutrients from the soil, water and noise pollution and others. Habitat loss may be preceded by fragmentation of an initial habitat.
