Abstract

Microbial Chemistry as a Foundation for the Development of Modern Biopharmaceuticals

Author(s): Elias M. Van der Hoek

Biopharmaceuticals represent a rapidly expanding class of therapeutic agents derived from biological sources, including proteins, peptides, and complex biomolecules. Microbial chemistry plays a central role in the production and optimization of biopharmaceuticals by enabling controlled biosynthesis and chemical modification of biologically active compounds. Microorganisms provide efficient platforms for producing structurally precise and functionally active therapeutic molecules. This article examines the contribution of microbial chemistry to biopharmaceutical development, focusing on chemical properties, production strategies, and pharmaceutical relevance.
