Abstract

Phytochemical Investigation and Screening towards in Vitro Hepg2 Cell Lines Studies with Ethanolic Leaf Extracts of Ipomoea sepiaria

Author(s): G Shanthini Nachiar, A Porselvi

Background: To investigate ethanolic leaf extracts of Ipomoea sepiaria for liver cancer cell lines the phytochemical studies reveals the presence of carbohydrates, steroids, tannins, glycosides, alkaloids, phenols and flavonoids by which means flavonoids plays a vital role in curing the cancer and other diseases ailments.

Methods: The human liver cancer cell line (HepG2) was obtained from National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS), Pune and grown in eagles minimum essential medium containing 10% Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS). All cells were maintained at 370C, 5% CO2, 95% airand 100% relative humidity. Maintenance cultures were passaged weekly and the culture medium was changed twice a week.
Results: Ethanolic extract of Ipomoea sepiaria was used in five different concentrations such as 31.25 μg, 62.5 μg, 125 μg, 250 μg and 500 μg. Ethanolic extract of Ipomoea sepiaria was effective against in vitro liver cancer cell lines of HepG2 cells at 500 μg and the percentage cell inhibition was found to be 90.37% which has been represented in figure and in tables.
Conclusion: Flavonoids plays a major role in recent trends at curing life threating diseases such as cancer, whereas to avoid the side effects of allopathic drugs herbal medicines has been procured and used traditionally to cure all kind of diseases in this plant extracts flavonoids has been reported by means of which liver cancer study was carried out and the result obtained is very effective for future investigations.
