 Drug development is the process of bringing onto the market a new pharmaceutical drug once a lead compound is identified through drug discovery process. It includes preclinical microorganism and animal research, filing for regulatory status. New chemical entities are compounds which arise from the drug discovery process. These have promising activity against a specific biological goal which is important for disease. Yet little is known about this NCE 's health, toxicity, pharmacokinetics, and metabolism in humans. Before human clinical trials, it is the function of drug development to evaluate all of those parameters. Additionally, drug development must determine the NCE's physicochemical properties: its chemical makeup, stability, and solubility. Manufacturers must refine the method they use to produce the chemical so that they can scale from a milligram-producing medicinal chemist to kilogram- and ton-scale manufacturing.
