Sports medicine, also known as sports and exercise
medicine (SEM), is a field of
medicine devoted to physical
health and sports and exercise related injury care and prevention. The aim of sports
medicine is to help people participate in exercise in a healthy and efficient way to meet their fitness goals. Sports
medicine specialists treat a wide variety of physical conditions from acute wounds such as fractures, sprains , strains and dislocations. These also treat chronic overuse-caused injuries like tendonitis, degenerative diseases and overtraining syndrome. Sports
medicine blends general medical knowledge with basic concepts of sports science, exercise physiology, Orthopedics, biomechanics,
nutrition in sports and even
psychology in sports. A sports
medicine staff may include physicians, surgeons, athletic trainers, sports psychologists, physical therapists, nutritionists, coaches and personal trainers.
